Supporting research students to prepare for their viva, a new online tool – Gina Wisker and Peter Hartley

This arose from some work done on interviewer improving your performance. This tool enables you to respond to some real interview questions and review your performance as well as enable you to look at this with advice and rehearse again.

The research on viva’s states that students do not know how to prepare for this and there is limited supervisor time to develop students. This is seen as “scary” thing. Practice helps students feel more confident.

The tool has general over-arching questions and is in 20 minutes blocks. The potential is for students to practice but also for supervisors to learn about the process and ask questions. The process focuses on choosing an examiner and a set of questions and using a web cam you can video yourself answering the questions. There are six categories of questions and with the questions there are hints about what the examiners are looking for.  The questions were chosen from the literature and areas that are key to discussing your thesis so covers:
·         Choosing your topic
·         Concepts and theories
·         Your research methodology
·         How the research progressed
·         Your research results
·         The importance of your work

Feedback so far includes student comments about would not have known where to start, gave me a process to plan my preparation and boost to confidence.
