Engaging with the literature to help us Ranald MacDonald

This was a great session focused on what texts and authors influenced our practice. Ranald had identified some key texts and chose some paragraphs from these for us to discuss and reflect on how they influenced us and whether we used them in teaching. This was really good providing an opportunity to revisit some key works in the field and the discussion amongst those of us in the workshop was really engaging.

Some of the authors he used were:
Bain K (2004) What the best college teachers do Cambridge Mass Harvard University Press
Brookfield S D (1995) Becoming a critically reflective teacher San Francisco
Rogers C (1983) Freedom to learn for the 80’s Columbus Ohio Merrill

Ranald also talked about the idea centre which has a range of resources that can be used and these come in three main types which are:
  • POD-IDEA Centre notes on Instruction
  • POD-IDEA notes on learning
  • IDEA papers

He has used their resources on many occasions and find them great so here’s the link www.theideacenter.org
