My workshop – Is professional development for teaching seen as important compared to research in higher education?

This workshop was focused around the formal and informal approaches we use for staff at City at present as the presentation component. The formal included the MA Academic Practice, The PhD programme, the award scheme and the NTFS scheme. The informal focused on the fellows network, the conference and the journal. The workshop then asked participants to discuss what strategies they had used that were both successful and unsuccessful. Interestingly no-one raised any unsuccessful in their groups but there were some good successful strategies used. These included having their conference off site which we have discussed, having awards schemes but a range including a prestige dinner for their student nominated lecturers and every member of staff (30) presenting once a year at each staff meeting about something they had done in their teaching or assessment which worked well. There was some good discussion but many in the room faced the same issues we have with involvement at smaller events being the normal attendees.
