Transforming Learning by Adopting Wiki for Project work

This paper focused on a project that had been undertaken with a group of students on a teaching degree. The module the students were studying was focused on ICT and a wiki was chosen because no programming language was needed and pictures and videos can be linked. A free google site was used for this. The students have to undertake a project and so the wiki was linked to this but was formative. One of the main objectives of the course was that students should discuss critical issues surrounding the use of an IT supported learning environment.

29 students took part in the module and they had a workshop to start with focused on how to edit the wiki and post to this. The group of students all had a project to do and were to use the wiki to provide additional support for each other in developing the project. The students were divided into groups and then had to choose a topic around the social implications of IT. There were two weeks to work on the project and to help the students all had the project guidelines, an assessment rubric and timelines. Students worked on their own group project but also had to peer assess two other group projects and undertake a personal reflection.

7 of 8 project groups included pictures/cartoons on their wiki, 6 of 8 included newspaper articles and 5 of them had links to journals. Two groups also included activities for learners to undertake as part of the wiki and one added discussion questions. The students evaluation provided both negative and positive comments about the wiki and helpful it had been but the overall view was that it was helpful. In terms of the assessment rubric students felt this helped them identify what the lecturers were looking for.
