Discover, dream, design and deliver: Using appreciative inquiry to support and value, reflection and educational development with staff and students in Higher Education – Claire Taylor

Method developed by David Cooperider and colleagues in 1980’s following a discussion with Cooperider’s wife about art and the appreciative eye. There are some assumptions underpinning this approach which are that every human system has something that works and that what we focus on and the language we use becomes our reality. Reality is created in the moment and there are multiple realities from players which relate to our value differences. The key principles to this approach are that there are good things in all systems but these could be made better and you should look for the possible. There is a big picture and you should focus on limitless capacity and imagination.

This is not about problem-solving but is about growth, new discourse, an overview of the ideal, expands vision and creates new energy. This is a 4D cycle so Discover (what is best/good), Dream (What might be), Design (what should be) and Deliver (how to learn, adjust and improve).

Claire provided two examples of use in the institution one was focused on redesign of induction events and one was redesign of a programme.

There are challenges of using this which are encouraging free thinking, avoiding the default position of focusing on problems, be truly inclusive and value all contributions. This requires thinking outside the box.
