PLENARY SESSION - VIVIENNE BOZALEK, UNIVERSITY OF THE WESTERN CAPE, CAPE TOWN, SOUTH AFRICA. "PARTICIPATORY PARITY IN TEACHING AND LEARNING"

This plenary focused on a discussion about all equally taking part in education. There was a link to social justice through discussion of a human capabilities approach which looks at people as valuable and focuses on resources helping people to be valuable. There needs to be flexible learning opportunities for this to take place. This was placed within context of South Africa in 1970’s. The change then was from knowledge for knowledge sake to knowledge for action. Learning became active in this approach and students were encouraged to act, sing, model or draw. There were a range of examples of approaches students used such as venn diagrams, mapping, and collecting pictures. This approach is often used now where students have limited education and cannot write.
